Judge's Comments: Jaw dropping sophistication in a lock-tight composition. A virtuoso display of high-key muted color; look at how warm (and light) the darkest dark is (and I invite you to spend a moment in awe at the audacity of the highlight colors...). We are tossed into a chaotic, vaguely disquieting situation, narratively forced into identifying with the central character, the only one in “full color.” So many delicious unanswered questions (any significance to the fact that the boy and the girl both have triangles on their chests? Are the turquoise and magenta some sort of analog for baby blue and pink? And if so why....). My sole quibble is the secondary kid; the one with her finger in her mouth - IMHO she’s a bit too newspapery-black-and-white for the rest of the piece. But what the hell do I know? This painting is a killer - Charlie Hunter
