Judge: Daniel Keys

Aries by Daniel Bilmes
60 x 96 Oil

Judge's Comments: I found Daniel’s painting to be particularly appealing for several reasons: When judging the basics (drawing, values, color, edges, composition), it meets my expectations, and tells of an artist with advanced painting skills. The overall mood created in the painting, and the artist’s use of design and expertly controlled value patterns, mixed with a variety of textures and technique, creates an interest that goes beyond first impressions of what might have been the actual scene (a taxidermic ram on display at a museum of natural history perhaps?). Depicting wildlife in art has been of special interest to me as of late, and I find this piece to be very inspiring! - Daniel Keys

Summertime Portrait by Stephanie Deshpande
12 x 9 Oil

Judge's Comments: A well thought out portrait that comes across as ‘natural’ can be quite the challenge. Stephanie’s endeavor reads beautifully as one that isn’t fussy, or over-worked, and gives us the impression that we’re beholding the work of a very skilled painter. At 12 x 9 inches, it’s quite the small gem. - Daniel Keys

Painter's Tape (Fern) by Felicia Forte
16" x 16" Oil

Judge's Comments: Felicia’s unique understanding of composition, mixed with a fearless sense of whimsy that compels her to always add the unexpected, fascinates me. I’m drawn to still-lifes that go beyond what’s conventional, and this certainly fits the bill. Every element serves a greater purpose, and upon closer examination, calls us to rethink our opinions of the ordinary. Bravo! - Daniel Keys

Fit to Be Tied by David Tanner
24 x 18 Oil

Judge's Comments: David’s ability to draw shows in all of his work, and this piece is no exception. It also strikes a chord with me because I often see a similarly disappointed look in the mirror when I attempt to tie a tie! (Consequently, I still run ties by my father’s office on occasion because no one can tie them quite like he can.) - Daniel Keys
