Vermillion Color by Josh Elliott
20 x 24 Oil

Judge's Comments: Dirt never looked so clean and inviting! The viewer is drawn into the painting by the sweeping lines of the wash. Clear color notes in the foreground explode from the muted distance - refined drawing and design of the varied shapes within shapes....One senses the quietude and silence extending out into the expansive desert. - Randall Sexton

Tin Lizzy by Tanya Bone
12 x 24 Oil

Judge's Comments: Solid design (hints of Wyeth) draws the viewer into a timeless scene – nostalgic, warm and sun bathed. Wonderful attention to the worn/weathered textures of the barn. The details of the old car and interior space draw the viewer in..and then keep the eye moving around the painting. Great play of color temperature. Strong abstract composition. Fun title - Randall Sexton

America's Cup Jubilee Regatta, August 21, 2001 by David Bareford
24" x 48" Oil

Judge's Comments: There is a beautiful glow in this painting. The color shifts in the sky and water, the sun (and wind) caught in the sails and then reflecting in the water works with the slight diagonals of the boats and surf to keep the eye moving. Red accents in the lead boat pull you into focus. We are witness to the visual pageantry of the regatta in choppy waters. - Randall Sexton

Yellow Umbrellas, Piazza San Michele (Lucca) by James Crandall
24" x 36" Oil

Judge's Comments: Love the light! Dazzling...an “imperial” moment for yellow – “tastes like real butter” Awesome composition with second, and then third focus of the figures with yellow notes enveloping all. Natural rendering of the figures and details. Great play of the blue accents notes (pigeons and spots of blue above) against the larger yellow masses. - Randall Sexton

Strength by Susan Ploughe
16 x 12 Oil

Judge's Comments: This sensitive portrait is skillfully rendered with a thought provoking and pensive mood. Great color play in the composition with the shot of red against the cooler( more neutral) foil. Great relationship of the large masses. Fine details and soft edges – contrast the title. We feel “strength” is conveyed by the age of figure and a sense of strong character defined by her life's work. - Randall Sexton

Morning Sun by Michael Maczuga
30 x 24 Oil

Judge's Comments: Nothing says more about a painting than a gut blast that say’s... “damn I wish I did that” I just love the loose handling- combined with the attention to detail. Sweet scene granted – a feast for the eyes – great color notes. Mysterious space. Beautiful brushwork and patterns. - Randall Sexton

Kumming Scupture Studio by Ned Mueller
12 x 9 Oil

Judge's Comments: I love the break up of space in this interior scene of a studio. Deftly handled simplification to an otherwise complicated scene. I love the theme of the artist-at-work. Great color scheme – warmth of the space contrasts the cool colored center of interest. Can you do my business card? - Randall Sexton

Peonies and Daisies by Kathy Anderson
24" x 30" Oil

Judge's Comments: Symphonic - musical composition of light colored peonies and daisies in a darker field. Traversing rhythms of the greens and and sensitive interpretation of the flowers work together to “massage the eyes”. The viewer is in the front seat of a botanical body wash...Blossoms dancing across the windshield. Tasty “cool-light” scheme. - Randall Sexton

Our moment by Dominic Avant
30 x 40 Oil

Judge's Comments: ...Is now universally “ours”....a joyous moment (between mother and daughter) on a carefree sunny day at the beach. We suspect that there is a connection between the artist and the pair....perhaps one family? Great expressions captured. The composition is strengthened by the inclusion of the saturated color notes of the toys and the juxtaposition to the figures. There is an overall ease of technique that goes “hand in hand” with the subject matter. - Randall Sexton

Hell For Leather by Steve Atkinson
40 x 30 Oil

Judge's Comments: Spicy title...Grandly illustrative painting of an instant frozen in time, action, and a lifestyle. Steeped in the tradition of western art. Great action and movement, depth, and flawless rendering. Extremely high level of technical skill combined with a love of the subject matter. - Randall Sexton

Standing Strong by Mike Malm
24 x 36 Oil

Judge's Comments: Juicy paint, atmosphere, and mood...It’s enough to make a painter drool! Wish I could see this in person to see the paint surface- looks thick and substantial. Brrrrr it’s cold – we sense the two are standing close just to stay warm. Lot’s of subtlety happening around the big, bold and beautiful shapes of the horses: shadows in the snow, suggested shapes in the distance, subtle color shifts in the grays, wetness. Awesome. - Randall Sexton

Spring at the Pond by Mike Malm
18 x 14 Oil

Judge's Comments: Thank god for the change in seasons.... This piece just rocks my boat. Flawlessly free paint handling...impressionistic approach that is downright enviable. Great color in all the right places. Transparent yet reflective water...the light of day....subtle gesture in the figure – good boot...just awesome. - Randall Sexton
