spring run off by Bob Beck
20 x 24 Oil

Judge's Comments: Bob Beck gives us a crystalline winter day, subtle contrasts of secondary colors, simple yet strong composition created by the movement of verticals, and a great understanding of all the modulations of green in the landscape. I must admit I love a good landscape painting, and this is it. - Marcia Burtt

Aenor by Marina Dieul
10 x 8 Oil

Judge's Comments: Marina Dieul shows us an eager young girl in a refined way. I admire the subtle and unexpected reflections of blue in Aenor's face. The impression I get is that the artist finds beauty through seeing and working rather than by knowing "the rules." Refreshing and elegant. - Marcia Burtt

Composer by Rita Curtis
28 x 30 Oil

Judge's Comments: Rita Curtis has composed a dramtically lit portrait showing the sitter's features, body language, and preoccupation. I particularly like the dark shape of the piano, and the way the white of the keyboard brings us back to his face. - Marcia Burtt

A Painter's Inspiration by Ryan Brown
72 inches x 84 inches Oil

Judge's Comments: Ryan Brown has combined portrait with landscape in an impressive large painting. The painting is opened up by the bright areas of water and the beaten path. The direct gaze of the painter plus the open areas activate what might be a dull midday landscape. - Marcia Burtt

Kestrels by Laura Buss
14 x 11 Oil

Judge's Comments: Laura Buss! I can't tell if this is a painting of a shaped support, or if the support is in fact shaped. But what matters is the beautifully designed and painted image, bringing to mind tattoo art as well as wildlife art and trompe-l'oeil painting. - Marcia Burtt

"floating" by Robert Lemler
10" x 14" Oil

Judge's Comments: Robert Lemler uses the absolute minimum of means to get the maximum out of this subject. The feet alone are worth a thousand words. - Marcia Burtt

Asian Beauty by Cynthia Feustel
30 in x 20 in Oil

Judge's Comments: Cynthia Feustel doesn't need or want dramatic lighting or brushstrokes. She lets a beautifully simple composition, one area of complex decoration, and the sitter's open, serene, delicately realized expression say it all. A masterful portrait. - Marcia Burtt

The Wait by Albert Ramos Cortes
28 inches x 22 inches Oil

Judge's Comments: Albert Ramos Cortes reveals waiting through the sitter's hands. The frontal placement of the model and neutral colors play off the complexity of the carpet behind her. - Marcia Burtt

Last Light by George Handrahan
12 x 16 Oil

Judge's Comments: George Handrahan caught the last light on a vivid winter landscape. Blue snow shadows against the red of winter willows, together with a dynamic composition, makes this a compelling study. - Marcia Burtt

Orange Lilies in a Mexican Vase by Norah Lee
28 x -

Judge's Comments: Norah Lee has her own rich and subtle way of painting a vase of flowers, but I took added pleasure from seeing references to Cezanne and Matisse. Wish I could see this in person. - Marcia Burtt

Early Morning Ray by Marcel Franquelin
18 x 24 Oil

Judge's Comments: Marcel Franquelin has suppressed brushstrokes and color to allow a strong composition, masterfully executed surface modulations, and contrasting value tell the story. We feel we're in the room. - Marcia Burtt

"Miss Logan" by Carolyn McDonald
20" x 16" Oil

Judge's Comments: Carolyn McDonald, I love this painting. It's rare to see a portrait that is not self-consciously using all the tricks. (Maybe you know what I mean: blurring edges, that kind of thing.) I love the line that runs around the figure, the modulated yet solid use of color and form. Thank you! - Marcia Burtt
