Michelle in Red by Dan Beck 16" x 12" Oil
Judge's Comments: This is a great painting. I love how everything is suggested except for the important parts. My favorite bit though is the light on the hair with just a few strokes it is perfect. I also like how the colors are mostly toned down except for the red, and that the red/pink is repeated behind the girl. Beautiful!

Child on the Beach by Erin Meads 9" x 7" Oil
Judge's Comments: This one struck me right away. I love the innocence of the pose and the strong light, not over-done. The sharp edges around the child vs. the soft ground is perfect. The proportions of the child are right on but my absolute favorite part is the little highlight on the shoulder. This is wonderful.

Spring Showers and Sunset by Judith Mackey 20 x 30 Oil
Judge's Comments: I love the colors here! This painting has a very dramatic feel a perfect storm of rain, clouds and sunset. The green repeated at the top of the sky and on the ground, and the purple in the clouds and foreground flowers (?) balance the colors, and the orange of the sunset just glows. The few darks in the painting give the values a nice balance, as well as the smidge of light in the cloud and again on the ground.

Light Bearer by Charles Pompilius 36 x 30 Oil
Judge's Comments: Very well done. This painting is reminiscent of old master paintings, with the window light, the soft, layered paint and the little bit of candle light. The hands, often a challenge to paint, are perfect, as is the face. The composition is well balanced. Lovely.

Laguna Drag by Jim Wodark 12 x 24 Oil
Judge's Comments: This is a wonderful painting! A real WOW composition with stunning light. I love how the road leads into the meat of the scene, and how the near part in shadow balances the sunlit buildings, trees and hills. It all just WORKS!

Going Green in Europe by Barbara Flowers 12 x 9 Oil
Judge's Comments: This is a gem of a painting. It is so simple, yet it works. The green car is incredibly cute, and the way everything tilts a bit to the left gives it a comic air. The light is lovely and the composition perfect. To top it off, the title is fabulous!

Bermuda sky by Maggie Cao 9 inches x 12 inches Oil
Judge's Comments: This one really struck me right off. I have to admit I have a particular fondess for suggesting a scene rather than painting every single little detail. This painting is a fabulous suggestion of such a simple, everyday scene, but the slice of light makes it truly special! I love the bits of pink contrasting with the green on the front left. Really lovely.

Santa Anita Ave. by William Wray 24 x 18 Oil
Judge's Comments: I adore the atmosphere in this painting. The variety of colors in the sky is really amazing, all mixing in the eye to suggest either the sun going down or coming up. My favorite part is the left edge of the green sign, broken up with bits of orange fabulous!

Tropical Laguna by Jim Wodark 24 x 36 Oil
Judge's Comments: This is kind of scene we all hope to see when we go to the coast and take a walk at sunset. The scattering of clouds in the sky is just perfect the sun hitting the rocks/cliffs creating that beautiful orange that contrasts perfectly with the blue sky lovely. It is a great composition and well
it just all comes together perfectly.

Bushels of Crabs by Elaine Hahn 17 x 17 Oil
Judge's Comments: There is a lot I like about this painting. I love the crop of the baskets and how the colors work together gloriously. I love the jumble of crabs I know that must have been a real challenge to paint. Most of all I love the one little claw sticking up near the top left, as if pleading for one last chance to get back in the water. Really nice.

Patience by C. E. Norton 10 x 10 Oil
Judge's Comments: This one struck me instantly. Its such a pleasing, balanced composition, but at the same time contains a ton of anticipation of movement, as if the cat could jump out of the painting at any moment. The values are lovely it really works with the backlight and the lit up whiskers. Lovely!
