Little Girl with Toy Cars by Yen-Ching Chang
28 x 22 Oil

Judge's Comments: I gave this painting best in show because I was so captivated by the expression in this little girl’s eyes, and the strong overall design. I love the red car coming in, taking you to her beautiful hands, love the loose quality of paint and soft edges. I always look for movement in a painting, and this is handled beautifully with the red dancing throughout. Yen-Ching’s skill and thoughtful design goes way beyond being a good figure painter, which he is. - Kathy Anderson

Orange on Green Box by John Murray
12 x 16 Oil

Judge's Comments: I love the color harmony in this painting. Every part of it is carefully executed – the glow in the oranges, the way each nail head is painted differently, the beautiful texture in the background. The combination of observing details but painting them loosely is very effective. - Kathy Anderson

December Sky by Jerolyn Dirks
11" x 14" Oil

Judge's Comments: This painting caught my attention from the start because of the strong simple design. The transparent shadow on the roof is so beautiful, the texture and warm color of the barn , the edges on the sky holes – and the little bird just right, completing the story. - Kathy Anderson

Red by Romanoos Mattonen
24 x 18 Oil

Judge's Comments: The handling of the kimono in this painting is what I was drawn to – painted very realistically, but giving me the feeling that the geisha heads were designed by Romannos to be placed where they are to lead you around. The softness at the bottom and the way the folds and shadows lead you to the model’s hand are also very well done. - Kathy Anderson

Adjusting the Costume by Pauline Roche

Judge's Comments: I love the story in this painting, and I really love how Pauline handled the background – nothing was needed to clutter up the strong design of the two women. Her knowledge and drawing skills are apparent as the foundation to a great narrative. - Kathy Anderson

Sunshine Breakfast by Stan Rogers
16 x 20 Oil

Judge's Comments: The brushwork in this painting is so beautifully painted I feel like it makes everything move. Wonderful color harmony and handling of values. The quiet street in the front, the large shapes of the trucks and buildings combined with the activity of the figures works great with the patterns of white to carry you through. - Kathy Anderson

The Green Lamp Shade by John Lonergan
36 x 24 Oil

Judge's Comments: This painting shows great knowledge and thoughtfulness to simplify the light and dark patterns and keep things from looking too busy. The shadow patterns are designed with great care and I love how the background is integrated with the design. Strong drawing, and the green shade is a great contrast. - Kathy Anderson

Snow Filled Creek Bed by Don Biehn
8 x 10 Oil

Judge's Comments: I’m always attracted to snow scenes and Don obviously paints from life and captures a mood and atmosphere quickly .What really works for me in this painting is the orange tree, which lends a sense of fall ending and the beginning of winter. - Kathy Anderson

Yellow Rabbitbrush by Sue Smith
12 x 16 Oil

Judge's Comments: This is a great plein air piece, very abstract, with a wonderful feeling of movement in the directional use of the branches in the brush. I love the depth and variety of yellows, which can be a tricky color to keep clean and warm in the darks and lights. - Kathy Anderson

Barcelona Musician by Stan Rogers
16 x 36 Oil

Judge's Comments: I love paintings with a strong story and where you can see the artist carefully designed it instead of copying what is there. Stan did a great job on both counts – the isolated musician with his red guitar, the chrome on the case leading you around the corner to the boys talking, and finally to the activity beyond. - Kathy Anderson
